Expressiones Cultural Center proudly announces Conexo, the culminating solo exhibition of Oaxacan artist and current Artist-in-Residence, Esteban Urbieta. A multidisciplinary artist born in Juchitán, Oaxaca, Urbieta’s work is deeply rooted in Zapotec cultural traditions and explores the intimate relationships between humans, animals, and the natural world. His longstanding symbolic vocabulary—featuring trees as emblems of family, birds and fish as forces of freedom, and the woman as a vessel of life—has earned him recognition across Mexico and abroad. [winterhous...ojects.com], [oaxaca-mio.com] Throughout his residency in New London, Urbieta immersed himself in the community and studio life, expanding his printmaking practice and embracing the profound visual shift brought by the stark winter light of coastal Connecticut. This environmental and emotional rupture catalyzed a striking transformation in his work. The vibrant, polychromatic vortices of his earlier compositions have shifted toward more distilled, linear forms, often rendered in monochromatic palettes reminiscent of his Birds That Sing Inks series. Figures fracture, silhouettes dissolve, and light intervenes to reveal new truths. Conexo reflects an artist in the midst of renewal—inviting viewers into an exploration of how fracture can become a form of reconnection, and how unfamiliar light can reshape not only the figure but the self. The public is invited to join us on March 14 for the opening reception and to experience this powerful new chapter in Urbieta’s artistic journey.
