Nahúm Flores Solo Exhibition at Expressiones Nahúm Flores’ work emerges from lived experience—journeys marked by displacement, survival, and memory. In fragments of narrative, he recalls the train rides through Mexico, the hunger, the uncertainty of destination, and the fleeting kindness of strangers. These stories are not simply autobiographical; they are testimonies of migration, of the fragile line between hope and despair, of the human capacity to dream even in the face of loss. Flores, born in Honduras and raised in Canada, has long explored themes of exile, identity, and belonging. His paintings, drawings, and installations often weave together personal recollections with collective histories, creating images that oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Figures emerge and dissolve, landscapes blur into psychological terrains, and memory becomes both burden and liberation. This Fall, Flores joined Expressiones as Artist-in-Residence. Several works in Locating a Distance were created here in New London, infused with the immediacy of studio experimentation and dialogue with our community. Others come from his own collection, tracing the continuity of his practice across time and place. Together, they form a constellation of images that ask: how do we locate ourselves when distance defines our lives? The exhibition is not only a meditation on migration but also on resilience—the persistence of imagination as a form of survival. Flores’ art reminds us that even in the most precarious circumstances, the act of creating becomes a way of reclaiming presence, of asserting humanity. Locating a Distance invites viewers to step into these layered spaces, to witness the echoes of journeys that are both deeply personal and universally resonant.
