“Relotía…Letario…Loteria is a poetic experiment inspired by La Lotería, the Mexican game of chance combining iconic images and playful riddles. Created during my 2025 residency with Expressiones in Guadalajara, the project explores how language shapes perception. As I learned Spanish, the image-text format reminded me of an ABCDario, prompting me to photograph the city through the lens of riddles. Each day began with a visual goal—trees, shadows, power lines—and evolved into a game of linguistic and visual association. I crafted invented words, anagrams, and tongue-twisters paired with photos that echo or challenge their meanings. The result is a series of expressive text-image works that prioritize poetic resonance over literal communication, inviting viewers to engage with language and image as intertwined tools of discovery. “ David Schulz is an artist-educator currently living and working in Connecticut.
